Soleus Massage
If you have never really worked the Soleus muscle before it may get a little tight when you start doing some focused strengthening for it! Gentle massage can release tension and can actually help increase the activation of the muscle in some people.
Instructions:
The Soleus muscles responds best to a combination of trigger point releases and small circular movements to get the blood flowing. See if you can find each of the trigger points indicated in your calf. This can take some practise but is worth it when you get the right spot!
Find the point; hold it firmly for 15 seconds and it should start to release. If it doesn’t, you are holding too hard. Repeat on several points. Aim to feel the muscle relaxing under your hand, rather than just aiming to feel pain!\
Then massage the bulk of the muscle in sweeping movements to get the blood flowing again.
Notes
- Try not to feel like you are pushing the muscle out of the way
- Focus on ‘asking’ the muscle to release
- If you have had an injury, massage above and below the point of pain rather directly over where it is sore
